year 2009 was not bad,Muturi, clocked 2:08:51, broke free of his running partner in the last stretch of the race leaving him trail 10 seconds behind. Terfa still clocked well with 2:09:01.


year 2008's winner, Kenyan Kiprotich Kenei, who was leading for most of the race until the 35-km mark was forced to slow down due to a muscle cramp.

Moon cake gambling in Xiamen , MId-autumn festival hottest tradition than ever

In Xiamen ,even the spring festival( Chinese new year ) could not compare...

You know what I am talking about , if you are now lucky enough to be in Xiamen , don't tell me nobody invites you to play the Mid-Autumn moon cake gambling game.

MId-Autumn festival  ,also known as the Moon Festival, or in Chinese, Zhongqiu Jie (traditional Chinese: 中秋節), is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people .
The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is usually around late September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumn and spring Equinoxes of the solar calendar, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.

Moon cake is the must have snack in the Mid-autumn Festival. The traditional moon cake is round shaped which symbolize the family reunion. To have a piece of moon cake with family members during the Mid-autumn Festival is one of the favorite times for most of people in China.  

The moon cake in Xiamen is different from elsewhere in the world. A set of moon cake composes of 63 moon cakes classified in 6 different sizes. To decide who can take which one, a moon cake game was innovated by general Zheng Chenggong about 300 years ago for easing soldiers' home sick during the Mid-autumn Festival. The game is so entertaining that only play once you'll never forget it.

The rule of moon cake game is quite similar to gambling. 6 dices are put into a big ceramic bowl. 10 people around the table, drop 6 dice one by one in clockwise. As a rule of thumb, the more dice with red four-point in one drop the bigger moon cake you can take. People drop the dice one after another until all the moon cakes are taken. Normally all the 63 moon cakes can be taken within 30 minutes, however the game can last for several hours until the last moon cake is taken by specific dice combination.

Mooncake Game was started about 1500 years ago by scholars craving success in imperial exams. The total of 63 prizes, based on various dice combinations, was named after imperial titles earned from the exam:

The Mid-autumn Festival with moon cake game in Xiamen sounds more important than the Spring Festival. Why the water supply disruption will last for 4 days - Xiamen Water Corp.- hot topic continous

Xiamen  will experience a 96-hour water supply disruption from 11:00pm, Sept. 18th to 11:00pm Sept. 22nd due to a water main relocation. However, many citizens still wonder that why the water supply disruption will last for 4 days.

Relocation work of the 40-kilometer-long water main will take 96 hours



According to Cai Siwei, vice president of the Xiamen Water Group, the first step of the whole project is to drain away water in the 40-kilometer-long water main, which will take 16 hours. After that, the welding and cutting works will last 10 hours.

The pipeline also needs rust protection after that, and it must go through many test routines including ultrasonic testing, X-ray examination and pipeline pressure testing. It will take 48 hours from cutting off the water to connecting the pipeline.

After the pipeline is connected, the water will need 24 hours to flow to the water plant. Because there is air in the pipeline, it may be broken when water pour into. And it also takes 24 hours to purify the water.

The Water Group has invited first-class pipe construction teams from Shanghai and Tianjin to participate in the project, and the work will operate 24 hours a day with 115 welders.

The 96-hour water supply disruption is due to the construction of the Fuzhou-Xiamen Railway.

Xiamen to temporarily restrict water supply from Sept.18th-22nd

In Xiamen ,The hottest topic from everyone , whoever you are , local citizens , Lao Wai (foreigner), demestic travellers ... is the water supply control in Xiamen from 11:00pm 18Sep till 11:00pm 22Sep.


Nobody knows if there is any water or just normal , people rushing to the super market to buy tanks , mineral water to wish to suvive in few days. Though I feel there is nothing to be worried , my friends , other Xiamen hotels peers ,obviously are not in a happy mood. Here we see some news from whatsonxiamen:






Xiamen to temporarily restrict water supply from Sept.18th-22nd

Xiamen will restrict its urban water supply in Siming District and Huli District, from 23:00pm, Sept. 18th to 23:00pm Sept. 22nd, as a result of the moving and reconnecting of some main water supply pipelines in the city, according to a circular issued by Xiamen Municipal government on Wednesday.

In order to ensure the smooth opening of Fuzhou-Xiamen Railway by the end of November, some water supply pipelines need to be moved and reconnected, the circular says.

During the construction, some main water supply pipelines will be cut off for reconnection, which will lead to a large decline of water pressure. Xiamen will restrict water supply and it will cost 96 hours to restore it.

Emergency measures will be taken to ensure the city’s normal operation.


Water Group (the water control department) will give priority to domestic water, hospital, school and some important government agencies, and cut off water supply to factories, infrastructure projects and special industry (vehicle cleaning, sauna and swimming pool).

During this period, water wagon trucks, fire trucks and fire hydrants will be used as temporary water supply points in the city. Ten secondary water supply equipments will work from 18:00pm to 21:00pm during Sept. 18th to 22nd.





Residents of Xiamen Island preparing for the 96-hr water supply disruption

After the Xiamen Government announced a four-day water supply disruption which will start from 23:00pm, Sept. 18th to 23:00pm Sept. 22nd, many citizens have poured into the supermarkets to snap up bottled water to tide over the hard times.

4-liter bottled water is the most popular product in the supermarkets during these days. “We just put 100 bottles of water on shelves yesterday and they sold out in a morning.” a salesperson at Trust-Mart said. Besides the bottled water, large water containers are also in great demand.

Water supply disruption also brings a good market to disposable goods, such as disposable dishware, underwear and gloves. Those goods are especially popular with young people.

Some travel goods, such as a travel toothbrush, instant foods, frozen foods and fruits also are on many people's purchasing lists.

Because the areas outside Xiamen Island won’t be influenced by the water supply disruption, many people are prefering to stay in hotels in these areas during 18th to 22th. Some hot spring hotels have even been booked up.

Xiamen is a place with a lot to offer and this hotel is one such place. My husband and our 6 month old baby thoroughly enjoyed our 6 nights stay. All the staff were not only friendly but helpful. Many of staff speak English. We felt valued and cared for during our stay. We enjoyed the location, the spacious, clean and comfortable room, the buffet breakfasts and also the other restaurants the hotel has to offer. It is a great hotel for the family even having a doctor on site which we unfortunately had to access when our little one had a temperature. This is a four star hotel with five star qualities. You won’t be disappointed.

This was a great place to stay me and my sister where in china on business and they helped us out got an interpreter for us, she was lovely.

The resturant was great with buffett breakfast, lunch and dinner lots to choose from and nicley priced.

“Great place to stay even on long hauls” May 6, 2009

I had a residential suite for a few weeks that I was staying at the Millennium Xiamen and I was extremely happy with the hotel. Excellent staff - they’re very friendly and understand that there is a huge language problem out on the streets so they came out with me and helped translate from English to Chinese whenever off-duty and possible. The rooms are kind of old-styled, but they shifted me to the renovated floor as soon as I told them this. Awesome place to stay in, even over very long periods.

Ambience like any other 4 star hotel in China - grand foyer, very stylish floral arrangements, large water feature in the cafe. Rooms are a decent size, with enormous, comfortable beds. I couldn’t get my shower to work but enjoyed a bubble bath instead! Because of time constraints we ate in the hotel (Portafinos) and found the food excellent but a little pricy for the quantity. Desserts which might be 10 RMB in a bakery were 38 RMB + tax. Breakfast buffet was fantastic. Wide range of pastries, fruits, cereals, dim sum, full English plus omlettes made to order; grilled sole… the works!!

Staffs are generally helpful. Room is clean but a little old but still acceptable. The location is excellent, 5 minutes to the Walking Street, and around 15min to 20min walk to the pier. Foot massage is available at a reasonable price on the ground floor of the hotel but the body massage is awfully expensive.

“Good Location, Great Staff, Good Food, Nice Hotel” Jan 5, 2009

We stayed at this hotel for a number of nights on our recent family holiday. The rooms were plenty big enough for us to put our children’s cots in beside the king size bed. The rooms were clean, well serviced and nicely appointed.

We found the staff both helpful and friendl (the concierge helped us to plan our trip out to see the Hakka buildings - well worth the trip if you have time).

The buffet breakfast was great! There was a good range of both western and Chinese food and the fresh fruit was very nice. They also recognised us quickly after our first night and so would bring high chairs and freshly brewed coffee with little prompting. We were very impressed.

All happening on July 11, 2009 ! No secrect ! The Historical and Magic of Xiamen will be in your hand , face to face !

Xiamen Wave's dicision to this action was long long time ago, and I guarantee this is just a start . Felt like Hamilton Island , Xiamen probably will make a lucky 'Ben Southall' here for the best job in the world , in a different space , a different culcure , a different people.

Here is what the Xiamen wave will do:

The ‘FIND IT’ challenge was conceived and realised by the Wave Arthouse and a group of illustrators led by Jeroen as a fun way of encouraging people to visit one of the remaining old quarters of Xiamen, and to view the work of local illustrators. Their creations will be on show at selected venues in the locale as well as in the Arthouse. The event will also provide an opportunity for local creative people to develop and show their own work and everyone can take part in several competitions also being organised. ‘FIND IT’ is a community based art event and everyone is invited to take part.



The labyrinth of corridors, alleyways and walks between Xiahe Lu and Zhongshan Lu, Lujiang Dao and Siming Beilu reveal an area rich with the sights scents and sounds of Xiamen’s past, a reminder of the way things once were and indeed still are, for a few remaining local stalwarts.



The area around the Wave Arthouse used to be important for banking and gold trading after Zhongshan Lu was developed as a commercial zone in 1928. Recently the film ‘Crazy Racer’ was shot in Zhenbang Lu—the corner house featured on the map appears in the film. Take time to examine some of the local buildings, particularly the second storey upwards, and you will gain valuable clues about past usage.



During your walk you will encounter the excitement of local street markets, stallholders selling all manner of foods including fruits, local delicacies, clothing and brick-a-brac, as well as fresh fish and meat. Please bear in mind that this is an authentic experience, life as it is lived by ordinary everyday people. Try some of the local produce.

2 FIND IT CREATIVE COMPETITION 11th July – 24th July [Winners to be announced on Saturday the 1st August 2009]

Participants are asked to submit articles/illustrations/photos/artwork of the Find it! Challenge Walk and the sights of the old Xiamen area by July 24. For instance you might wish to write about the area, take photographs of people, places or make drawings/illustrations- it’s up to you.

Prizes:

There will be two prizes. Each will receive a Deluxe Room for a one night stay in the Millennium Harbourview Hotel Xiamen for two people, including breakfast in the Coffee Shop, 2 Cocktails in Hollywood Bar and 2 soft drinks in Golf Bar.
